Want your first camping experience with your kids to be a pleasant one? Avid traveler, writer, and mother of four, Stormy Swain, offers three pointers to “keep those little faces smiling,” alleviating stress and maximizing enjoyment.
Take a kid-friendly food supply. Try dried fruits, trail mix, raisins, and jerky. For a sure thing, take your kids to the store and have them pick out their own snacks. Swain encourages dehydrating your own food, if you are able, because it’s cheaper and can be done long in advance. Additionally, she notes kids often enjoy sitting in front of the fire with a mug of hot cocoa or a cup of soup.
Include plenty of kid friendly activities. “Camping is a great time to bond with children,” Swain says. “If you are going to a camp ground, take your child’s bike or something from home that will keep them occupied while you prepare meals or the fire.” Additionally, consider taking hikes or playing board games. And don’t forget the camp fire and ghost stories, Swain reminds.
Prepare to camp in the car. “Most children love the idea of camping [in a tent], until bed time,” says Swain. “If you have really small children, plan on having them sleep with you in the car.” Even if you have older children, Swain cautions, make a bed in the car just in case they want to get into it late at night or early in the morning. Finally, Swain says use pillows and blankets from home, and have extra led flashlights or led lanterns on either side of the bed.
