University of Alaska Goes Green

The University of Alaska at Anchorage (UAA) is joining the LED University program, according to a press release from Cree, Inc. The LED University program is “an international community of universities working to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient LEDs across their campuses.”

Five years ago, UAA began converting lighting applications to LEDs, including signage, specialty lighting, aisle lighting in lecture halls, and theater stairway lighting. Recently, UAA completed a parking lot pilot with seven LED light fixtures, and more like it are anticaptied to follow as the reduction in energy consumption was nearly 60 percent when compared with the lights that were replaced. The university is also considering LED lighting for a number of other purposes throughout campus.
