LEDs Light-up Lettuce

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Scientists from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) have developed a method for making lettuce healthier by exposing it to UV LED light. Stephen Britz, a plant physiologist with the USDA, and his colleagues presented their research at the 2009 Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics/International Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/IQEC) earlier this month.

Apparently, exposure to ultraviolet LED light causes the leaves of lettuce to become darker and redder, meaning they possess more antioxidants. Diets rich in antioxidants are said to provide a variety of health benefits including improving brain function and slowing the effects of aging.

LED Lights and the Environment

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

The phrase “green energy” has a huge buzz surrounding it nowadays but the concept of conserving energy has been around for decades. In the past, however, conserving energy often proved impractical because need exceeded the ability to conserve. These days, however, there are a number of environmentally friendly products that are far more practical for use. LED lights are such products.

Whether they are used in flashlights, bicycle lights or home lighting, LED lights provide a far more environmentally friendly product that the traditional lights of the past. There are a number of reasons for this.  LED lights require less energy to operate for extended periods of time. This is why having LED lights installed into homes and businesses is becoming more popular.  In the same way, when you charge a LED light it will not require recharging as quickly as a standard light would. Also, if the LED light system is battery operated it will require fewer batteries and those batteries that it does use will last a long, long time.

LED Emergency Lights A Good Idea

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Disasters can happen at any time to anyone, anywhere. If you find yourself in the midst of a disaster or emergency situation, the last thing you want is to be looking around in messy drawers for a flashlight – or bulbs or batteries for the flashlight. It’s important that you keep an emergency kit that contains a LED emergency light for these instances. LED lights are great for this purpose – they are bright and the bulbs last much longer. The bulbs burn cool and LED lights use much less battery energy. There are also wind-up LED lights that you can purchase which don’t need any batteries at all.

The most important thing is to keep your emergency LED light somewhere safe, where you will have easy access to it. Not only good for emergency situations or disasters, if your power goes out, being able to locate a flashlight easily will save you a lot of time and trouble. It can be difficult to find things in the dark, so it is best to keep your LED light somewhere you will easily find it, such as on a peg by the front door, or in with your emergency kit (usually a bag or backpack near the exits in your home). If you have a LED light that requires batteries, make sure that you have a fresh set with your LED light.

LED light products are spreading into markets of all shapes and sizes.  The popularity of this new technology can be seen by looking at the wide variety of applications manufacturers are able to conjure up for this light source.

Flashlights have always been a big part of LED technology but manufacturers have been able to build upon the technology and incorporate better features into the existing benefits of LEDs. The battery lasts longer, the bulbs are brighter, and they are easier to operate. These basic principles have been built into lanterns, headlamps and keychain lights used by hunters and campers all over the world.
