Osram, Nichia and Lumileds are leading the pack in terms of LED global market share, in part because of the significant strides they have made in vehicle LED applications. The Audi R8, set to release this year, will feature full LED headlamps built using Lumileds and Osram LEDs. The Lexus LS600h which is now available was the first car to utilize full LED headlamps (they are provided by Nichia). The Cadillac Escalade Platinum will be the first SUV to use LED headlamps. Those are said to be provided by OSRAM. These companies have seized upon a market perfect for the benefits and features of the LED. Not only are cars with LED headlamps becoming more common, other car lights like the rear lighting and instrument panels are using LED lights more and more. This is the next area for the major automobile lighting application companies to tap into. It’s incredible to see how a new technology can be made to suit such a diverse and worldwide market. It will be interesting to watch how LED headlamps in cars change and/or shape the future of driving.
