Idaho: Beware of Bears

Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! Well, maybe just bears. Idaho Fish and Game reminds outdoor enthusiasts that as winter comes to a close, bears are stirring in their dens. And as they start to hungrily search for food, tasty humans need to be wary in bear country.

Large carnivore biologist Bryan Aber reports that signals from bears’ radio collars show initial movement close to or in their dens.

Canine Cautions for Fisherman

The Idaho Fish and Game issued an important warning for fishermen, specifically steelhead and salmon anglers, in a recent press release. Fish and Game reminded anglers that sharing your catch with your dog can be hazardous to its health.

Idaho Fish and Game reports that Salmon Poisoning Disease is a potentially fatal illness that dogs can contract by eating parts of raw ocean-going fish like steelhead and salmon.

Idaho: “Fish With A Legislator”

“Politics and fishing come together,” writes the Idaho Fish and Game about an upcoming event that will allow local citizens to cast a line alongside some of their elected officials.  The fishing event, dubbed “Fish with a Legislator,” is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. at Nampa’s Wilson Springs area on Saturday, April 4.

According to Idaho Fish and Game, Ada and Canyon County lawmakers aim to visit with constituents in addition to fishing the popular angling destination.

Idaho: Help Wanted

Idaho Fish and Game is asking for help with a variety of interesting and worthwhile projects designed to benefit wildlife habitat and the people of southwest Idaho. Here’s a sample of upcoming projects.

Big Game Winter Range Restoration
Thousands of sagebrush and bitterbrush seedlings will be planted in the weeks ahead on the Boise River Wildlife Management Area east of Boise. March 7 marked the first day of the annual volunteer native shrub restoration project. Additional planting efforts will be conducted on March 21, 28 and April 4. Transportation and all planting tools will be provided.

Idaho: Bald Eagle is Back

Thirteen adult bald eagles were identified along the Snake River in north-central Idaho as per a mid-winter survey completed January 15, reports the Idaho Fish and Game.

According to Joel Sauder, a biologist for the Fish and Game, that’s well above the long-term average of nine.

Idaho: Hunter and Bowhunter Education Courses

The Department of Idaho Fish and Game recently advertised registration for hunter and bowhunter education courses. According to a press release, seats are available at a number of hunter and bowhunter education courses scheduled February though April in several Lewiston-area communities.
