Pinhoti Hiking Trail Completed and Dedicated in Alabama

Monday, March 24th, 2008

On Sunday, March 16 over 200 hikers and conservationists gathered in Mount Cheaha to dedicate the new portion of the Pinhoti Hiking Trail. This new 140 mile trail connects Georgia to Alabama, completing the overall trailway that now runs from Maine to Alabama, connecting the MacKay and Appalachian trails.  The complete trail was adopted by the Appalachian Trail Conference in 1925 but only now has been completed – some 83 years later.

The entire trail spans over 2500 miles. Mount Cheaha, Alabama’s highest point, marks the Pinhoti Trail’s end. Six hikers to date have safely hiked the entire length of the new trailway.
