Is Camping Gear Really Romantic?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I was perusing some online camping blogs today when one led me to an interesting pair of articles by Bill Sassani. He wrote two articles for Valentine’s Day, one highlighting outdoor gear gifts for men and one doing the same for women. Now, call me a traditionalist, but I didn’t exactly know camping and hiking gear was on the approved list of gifts to buy for Valentine’s Day. Apparently, they are.

Now, I’ll concede that there’s a good argument for men, but I don’t know if his gear gift-giving opinion on women will stand up. Listen to one of his opening lines:

Hiking Gear | Foot Wear

Monday, March 17th, 2008

If you are embarking on a hiking trip you are taking part in a relaxing and fun activity. Much of the enjoyment you derive from this activity, however, might very well be undermined if you do not use the proper equipment and probably the most important gear item to select is a solid pair of hiking boots. Hiking boots provide a number of “services” while out on the trail including preventing blisters, maintaining traction on rough terrain, preventing ankle injuries, keeping your feet from getting wet when crossing small streams, etc. Keep in mind, even minor injuries or discomforts will grow progressively worse on a trail if you are not wearing the proper hiking boots. Yet, many people try and navigate trails wearing sneakers and their ilk. That won’t work! In fact, it can even pose a safety hazard. So, play it safe and play it smart: stick with a reliable pair of hiking boots when you head out on the trails. There are several different reputable brands to choose from – ask your outdoor retailer for help finding the right pair for the type of hiking you will be doing.

Hiking and Your Health

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

When people think of hiking they generally think of it in terms of a leisure activity. There are many powerful mental health benefits that can come from hiking in the clean, fresh air, observing and enjoying nature, stimulating your brain and your muscles. The physical benefits that hiking delivers are in fact, many. The most obvious would be the cardiovascular benefits that help develop a strong heart. Hikers can choose a long but easy relatively flat trailway to hike or a more difficult, inclined hike and still get an excellent workout for their heart.

There is also the calorie burning benefits of hiking. Hiking works a number of muscles in the back and legs, making it great exercise for those looking to shed a few pounds.  Exercise like hiking can also reduce bone loss as one gets up in age.

Florida’s Annual Hiking Trail Month

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

February is Florida’s Hiking Trails month.  The Florida Department of Environmental Protection along with the Florida Trail Association is urging Floridians to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the National Trails System Act by enjoying the hiking trails in the state this month.

February is considered a good time for Florida residents to promote environmental management by enjoying the outdoors and hiking trails the state has groomed and made available.  The groups also hope to promote healthy living and a lifestyle of outdoor activity.
