Knives are a frequent occurrence in modern film. Movie heroes and villains alike have brandished various types of small blades or sporting knives. Knife fights are often depicted as a more “fair” way to fight, especially in movies in which gun battles are the norm. Knife fight scenes are usually suspenseful and climactic, and a few knife fights stand out above the rest.
Here’s a look at the top 8 most memorable movie scenes involving knives:
1. Crocodile Dundee (1986)
Paul Hogan, the Australian film star, will always be remembered for the huge jungle sporting knife he wields in Crocodile Dundee. When confronted by a mugger bearing a switchblade, he calmly pulls out his own menacing blade and says, “That’s not a knife. THAT’S a knife.” In fact, the knife was custom-made for his character; the blade resembles a modified bowie knife with a sawback blade.
2. Rambo – First Blood (1982)
In the first Rambo, Sylvester Stallone carries a knife with a stainless steel 9-inch serrated blade, one of the many sporting knives he would use throughout the Rambo movies. Indeed, each of the four Rambo films has popularized a different sporting knife.
3. The Hunted (2003)
This fast-paced action thriller, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio del Toro, takes place in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. The movie emphasizes outdoor survival and sporting knife combat; bowie tracker knives are particularly popular in the film.
4. Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003)
This film has a very popular kitchen knife fight scene between Uma Thurman wielding a double-edged desert dagger and Vivian Fox bearing a large kitchen knife. The scene includes Fox’s memorable line: “We’ll have us a knife fight.”
5. Under Siege (1992)
What actor handles culinary knives better than Steven Seagal? Nobody, at least not compared to Seagal’s ex-Navy-SEAL-trained character. In his role as the ship’s cook in Under Siege, Seagal set the bar high for knife fights involving kitchen cutlery.
6. Taken (2008)
Toward the end of this action thriller, Liam Neeson must battle a vicious bodyguard to free his daughter from terrorists. The wicked-looking blade used by the bodyguard is a curvy Damascus steel serrated knife.
7. Gangs of New York (2002)
Of course we all remember the exciting knife-throwing scene in this film, involving Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day Lewis. Dubbed “The Butcher,” Lewis’s character uses a cutting and butcher knife to deal with his enemies. His character is based on the historical figure William “The Butcher” Cutting, a popular gang leader in NYC during the late 1800s.
8. Predator (1987)
In this classic sci-fi film, Arnold Schwarzenegger wields a 14-inch custom-made bowie knife. The blade has a curved handle and grip with a hooked hand guard for added support. Interestingly, a custom-made sporting knife was also used in his prior film, Commando (1985).
