It’s not unusual for homeowners to feel good about using LED lighting instead of more traditional methods – after all, they are the greenest available – but cows? According to a recent study by Oklahoma State University, a simple LED light can make cows more relaxed.
Researchers discovered this effect by accident when they pitted an LED light and a traditional fluorescent light against one another to examine the difference in energy use on a working farm. It’s well known that LED technology is more efficient and eco-friendly than other forms of lighting, but what the OSU researchers were surprised to learn was that the LED light had a positive mood-altering effect on cows. When milked under LED lights, the cows were seemingly more relaxed, as they produced an extra half-gallon of milk per day. Overall, the cows that were exposed to LED technology produced 6 percent more milk than those that were milked under the fluorescent lights.
So if you hate the overhead fluorescent lights at work, direct your boss to the OSU study (which, of course, has whipped the dairy world into a frenzy). Who knows? The simple LED light may be the solution to making your workplace a happier, more productive environment.
