You know LED lights work extremely well in flashlights, lanterns and home lighting systems, but did you know that exposure to certain types of LEDs can have positive health benefits?

That’s right! Exposure to blue and red LED lights, called LED light therapy, can help with a number of health problems, from acne to eczema and cancer to flesh wounds.

Though the more advanced treatments are still criticized by skeptics, LED light therapy has been proven to help prevent and treat acne, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and treat eczema. Here’s how it works:

Patients usually receive treatment for about twenty minutes twice a week. LED bulb strength varies, but most treatments are done using red or blue LED lights. The LED light exposure stimulates growth in skin cells by 150% – 200%, meaning skin imperfections heal themselves much faster. In fact, in a study done by David J. Goldberg and Bruce A. Russell, skin specialist from New York, NY, patients receiving LED light therapy showed marked improvement in their mild to severe acne. In their report, Goldberg and Russell state that, “blue and red LED therapy appears to have excellent potential in the treatment of mild to severe acne. Treatment appears to be both pain- and side effect-free.”

LED light therapy has also been used to help speed up the healing process on flesh wounds and in cancer patients. Because skin cells react so well to LEDs, light therapy is considered a relatively safe, non-intrusive treatment option. Despite successful studies, many professionals are still skeptical about the efficiency of LED light therapy.

Talk to your doctor or dermatologist if you think you or someone you know may benefit from LED light therapy.
