Ice Fishing | Prepare With the Right Gear

Fisherman who long for fishing season in their area to last all year long often turn to ice fishing to satisfy that desire.  Ice fishing is not difficult once you understand and own a few basic supplies.  The following outlines some basic ice fishing necessities a fisherman will need to take on this winter recreation.

If you are going to ice fish, you will need an ice auger.  An auger is used to cut a hole in the ice of whatever water source you will be fishing from.  A manual ice auger will do just fine for a beginner, so long as the blades have been sharpened properly and properly maintained.

Basic fishing tackle is necessary for ice fishing as well – sturdy fishing reel and line, appropriately sized hooks and bobbers, bait, and fishing plier or scissors. Be sure that all of this equipment is designed for cold weather fishing. Ask your sporting goods retailer for help determining which items will withstand harsher weather conditions. Some types of bait are not suitable for ice fishing, and cold weather line is necessary.

A piece of ice fishing gear that can help you catch more fish in the ice is a depth finder.  It doesn’t have to be fancy or extravagant piece of ice fishing equipment, just a simple depth finder for ice fishing will do just fine.  What is a depth finder?  It is a clip that you attach to your fishing line that will find the perfect depth for fishing, and hold your bait at that depth.

Because ice fishing can sometimes take place in very secluded areas where you may get stranded or disoriented, always have a survival kit in addition to your tackle.  Have a first aid kit, a signaling light, like an LED angler’s light or flashlight, food and water rations along with you to ensure you can survive an unfortunately event and signal for help.
