Essential Camping Gear: The Ipod Touch?

It appears Apple is attempting to broaden its target market by appealing to outdoor enthusiasts. Now, don’t get me wrong, I can embrace certain technological advances within the realms of camping and hiking — like LED light technology or new knife innovations – but accepting the Ipod as a potentially useful item in the outdoors went a little too far for me.

Apparently, there are a number of applications available on the Ipod Touch that are tailored to the outdoorsmen. Some of the suggested applications or uses include:

  • Compass/GPS
  • Torch/Flashlight
  • Notebook
  • Information storage (first aid, recipes, plants, etc.)
  • Calculator
  • Entertainment
Save the last point (I think Ipods are extremely entertaining), I’m still not sure the Ipod can deliver quite what the avid adventurer needs. Certainly, none of the applications can be an adequate substitute for the quality and reliability of the real thing. And I don’t know when the last time I took a calculator camping was. Maybe the last time I hiked up Math Mountain?Call me a traditionalist, but I thought the purpose of camping and hiking was to get away from all the busy-ness and noise technology brings into our lives. Again, don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful for much of technology, I just don’t believe it deserves a place in every area of our lives.[photo: ThibaultPoix]
