If there’s anything the recent flooding in Florida and devastating wildfires in the western U.S. have taught us, it’s that disaster can strike at any moment, without a smidgeon of warning. Indeed, across the globe, those who are in the path of floods, earthquakes or fires rarely get much of a head start. In Russia’s recent flooding, many families had virtually no warning of the coming floodwaters. In Colorado’s recent rash of wildfires, a telephone system intended to warn residents failed to function properly. And many Japanese in 2011’s devastating tsunami had just 15 minutes of warning.
When time is the only thing that stands between your family and an impending disaster, it’s extremely helpful to have a pre-packed disaster prep kit (sometimes called a BOB, or Bug Out Bag) ready to go. That way, even if you only have a five-minute head start, you can grab your bag and run, knowing your kit contains all the essentials you’ll need for two or three days away from home. (Typically, this is the maximum amount of time needed for government agencies and nonprofits to lend a hand to disaster victims.)
One of the most important things to have in your BOB is an LED emergency flashlight as well as emergency area lights (EALs). Few people realize just how dependent we are on light until they’re stuck without it. An emergency LED light is crucial for everything from navigating your way in the dark to signaling rescue parties to throwing strong light on fasteners for makeshift shelters.
Your family will appreciate emergency area lights, such as an LED lantern. When you’re stuck away from home, maybe even camping in emergency tents, it’s important to have as much social support as possible. Emergency area lights make it possible for families to gather, play games, prepare food and just talk after the sun goes down. COAST Products has specifically designed two LED emergency area lights, the EAL10 and the EAL20 LED lantern. Both feature red and white flashing light settings for catching rescue parties’ attention.
It’s also important to pack an LED emergency flashlight for every member of your family. That way, you’ll all be able to enjoy independence, and you’ll be able to signal for help even if you become separated. We recommend the EAL5 LED lantern, which is designed to be used either as a handheld LED emergency flashlight or as a lantern.
