National Preparedness Month: Be Prepared with LED Lanterns, Flashlights and More

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Hurricane Isaac Near LandfallSeptember is National Preparedness Month, and although it’s almost over, it’s not too late to start preparing your home, car and office for a potential emergency. Americans run the gamut in terms of how they approach disaster preparedness. For some, creating an emergency kit means stashing a few LED flashlights around the house. On the other end of the spectrum, staunch survivalists known as “preppers” spend small fortunes on building and stocking their own emergency bunkers.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency encourages families and businesses to aim for something between the two extremes: creating a disaster plan and stocking enough food, water and supplies for a three-day emergency.

COAST Emergency Area Lights (EAL) Put Focus on Disaster Prep Kit

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

Earthquake Survival KitIf there’s anything the recent flooding in Florida and devastating wildfires in the western U.S. have taught us, it’s that disaster can strike at any moment, without a smidgeon of warning. Indeed, across the globe, those who are in the path of floods, earthquakes or fires rarely get much of a head start. In Russia’s recent flooding, many families had virtually no warning of the coming floodwaters. In Colorado’s recent rash of wildfires, a telephone system intended to warn residents failed to function properly. And many Japanese in 2011’s devastating tsunami had just 15 minutes of warning.

When time is the only thing that stands between your family and an impending disaster, it’s extremely helpful to have a pre-packed disaster prep kit (sometimes called a BOB, or Bug Out Bag) ready to go. That way, even if you only have a five-minute head start, you can grab your bag and run, knowing your kit contains all the essentials you’ll need for two or three days away from home. (Typically, this is the maximum amount of time needed for government agencies and nonprofits to lend a hand to disaster victims.)

End of the World 2012: Survivalist Guide for Preparation

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

21.12.2012 _DDC4836Dec. 21, 2012: It’s almost here. For some, this date signals nothing more than the final three days of Christmas shopping. To others, however, it’s considered the end of the world. It is the date on which the 5,125-year-long cycle in Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, closely associated with the Mayan Civilization, will end.

Many people interpret that to mean the world as we know it will come to an end, often referring to Mayan and Hopi Native American prophecies about the end of the world. Many major religions insist the world will come to an end at some point, as well, including Christianity, Islam and Judaism (although none of them indicate it might happen this year). Indeed, as the Earth’s North and South poles shift magnetic positions and a growing number of natural disasters continue to plague the planet, there seems to be plenty of evidence that major change is afoot.

Issaquah WA Police Car - (Public Domain) ImageFor law enforcement professionals, LED flashlights are more than just handy gadgets – they’re crucial tools for investigation, applying non-lethal force and accurately aiming firearms. Tactical flashlights may be integrated into weapons, but most of the time police officers and other law enforcement personnel carry separate LED flashlights, which can be used for everything from non-lethal crowd control to checking the sobriety of a driver.

The bright beam of an LED flashlight in the eyes is often enough to stop a criminal in his or her tracks. Perhaps law enforcement experts’ most critical use of LED flashlights is in illuminating high-risk situations. If you’re pursuing an armed assailant, an LED flashlight can make a life-or-death difference. Below is a look at how law enforcement professionals can benefit from LED flashlights. (more…)

All about Wildland Fire Fighting

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Using fire to fight fireOne of the things we at COAST are most proud of is that firefighters (among other public service personnel) often choose our tactical LED flashlight models for use in the field. Because firefighting is such a demanding job, an LED flashlight for tactical use must meet much higher standards in terms of power, utility and durability than a flashlight intended for general use.

Of the different types of firefighters out there, wildland firefighters have one of the most rugged and potentially dangerous jobs in existence. Wildland firefighters battle uncontrolled wildfires, often located in the middle of nowhere; their job requires different equipment, training and techniques than firefighting in more populated areas. For example, an urban firefighter will use a powerful tactical LED flashlight for searching burning buildings, whereas a wildland firefighter will more commonly need illumination for navigating outdoor areas at night.
