Make the Holidays Greener with LED Lights

Monday, December 10th, 2012

Xmas TreeDeck the halls with boughs of holly! Like many Christmas songs, this ditty is outdated. Who actually decorates with live holly anymore? Then again, many people still light up their homes with incandescent holiday lights – even though they’re energy hogs that are notorious for blowing fuses. For a greener holiday season, we suggest switching to LED lights, which use 80 percent less energy than standard bulbs. Advantages of LED holiday lights include:

More shatter resistant. The average LED light cover is made of plastic – not glass, as traditional holiday bulbs are. Moreover, because LEDs are so small, they are less likely to shatter.

COAST Products Remembers: Emergency Responders on 9/11

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

American Flag at Site of 9/11 Memorial in Queens, NYHere at COAST Products and across the country, people are feeling mixed emotions about the 11-year anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. That planes should strike the World Trade Center and the Pentagon seemed unthinkable then, and many people are still struggling to understand what the attacks meant and whether the subsequent war in Afghanistan has been justified. One thing is not up for debate, however: the heroism and sacrifice of the 9/11 emergency responders.

Communities across the country are honoring the firefighters, police and other remarkable individuals who ran toward the smoldering towers when everyone else was running away. Here are two examples of some of the memorial ceremonies that have taken place to honor 9/11 emergency responders:

Camping Lanterns: Propane vs. LED Battery

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

LED LanternCamping enthusiasts love to sit under the stars, listening to ambient sounds drifting in the background – the chirping of grasshoppers, the croaking of frogs, the crackling of the campfire. For many adults, these camping memories also include the hissing of a nearby propane camping lantern.

The propane camping lantern has long been the traditional choice for camping illumination. In 1885, Austrian chemist Auer von Welsbach invented the durable thorium mantle, which created the basis for 100 years of propane lantern technology. (Historians note that Welsbach was partially driven by the competition of the incandescent electric light.) The propane lantern became a powerful source of light, providing the equivalent of a 300-watt light bulb.

All about Wildland Fire Fighting

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Using fire to fight fireOne of the things we at COAST are most proud of is that firefighters (among other public service personnel) often choose our tactical LED flashlight models for use in the field. Because firefighting is such a demanding job, an LED flashlight for tactical use must meet much higher standards in terms of power, utility and durability than a flashlight intended for general use.

Of the different types of firefighters out there, wildland firefighters have one of the most rugged and potentially dangerous jobs in existence. Wildland firefighters battle uncontrolled wildfires, often located in the middle of nowhere; their job requires different equipment, training and techniques than firefighting in more populated areas. For example, an urban firefighter will use a powerful tactical LED flashlight for searching burning buildings, whereas a wildland firefighter will more commonly need illumination for navigating outdoor areas at night.
