Camping in different climates necessitates different needs. Snow camping is obviously different from camping on desert plains, so having the right gear for the right environment is crucial for a successful trip. There are, however, a couple of essentials that transcend location and are just good tools to have anywhere you camp.
A good knife, for instance.
Knives come in all shapes and sizes: pocket knives, hunting knives, tactical knives, fillet knives, kitchen knives, and the list goes on. For general camping, I recommend a reliable folding knife.
Typically fashioned with a single blade that makes the body slim and comfortable (not bulky like some multitools or pocket knives), the folding knife often includes a belt or pocket clip, maximizing portability.
If well-kept, the blade is strong and sharp, and proves efficient in a variety of circumstances–everything from whittling mallow sticks to cutting twine to preparing grub.
Additionally, folding knives also come equipped with various features like lock-back technology, droppoint blades, serrated or partially-serrated blades, one-handed opening technology, etc. The knives are customizable to your specific needs and interests.
Whether you’re camping out in the wilderness or in a car site, you never know when a good knife will come in handy–which is exactly why you should have one on-hand at all times.
