Camping Close to Home

Very close, actually. With today’s economy struggling to survive, loading up the car and driving off to some secluded location deep within the heart of nature might not be a luxury you can afford. It is one, though, you can recreate for little to no cost at all. That is, if you’ve got a backyard.

With a little creativity and preparation, backyard camping can be excellent substitute for the real thing. The problem backyard camping poses, of course, is the temptation to go back inside at the first sign of trouble. So, here’s a few tips, courtesy Elena Newell, on how to prevent the need to retreat to the comfortable confines of your home.

First, make a list. Anything that you might possibly need for your backyard experience should be included. Remember things like tents, sleeping gear, LED lantern or flashlights, cooking gear, food, clothes, toiletries, etc.

Decide how to sleep. If you’re sleeping under the stars, check the weather. If you’re using a tent, Newell recommends setting it up early in order to make any necessary repairs. Also, remember to pack sleeping bags, blankets, mattresses, and pillows.

Pack all food. In order to create a realistic experience, you’ll have to pack all of your food. This includes food for meals, snacks, and beverages. You’ll probably need a cooler to keep things cold and a grill or camp stove to heat other things up.

Pack entertainment. Books, games, and sports equipment are all great things to remember to bring along.

Finally, don’t go back inside. Resist the temptation to return and quickly grab something you’ve forgotten. And try to stick it out if the weather turns bad. Part of the excitement in camping is problem-solving and using the resources around you. So, make a commitment to stay outside. When the experience is finally over, you’ll be glad you did.
