Expectations are high this year for steelhead fishing in the American River. Over the past two years, fishing in the river during the winter has been slow because early runs left the fishing low. It is expected that fishable steelhead numbers have improved significantly to the point where 2008 may be a red-letter year for fishing the system.
“The last couple years we’ve had a bunch of fish show up early and that’s kind of been it, but this year they’re trickling through all the way through the winter,” said JD Richey of Richey Sportfishing. fishwithjd.com “I don’t think it will slow down until March.”
Richey also believes that February is the perfect month for fishing the river because the water is low this year, creating clear defined locations for the fish to be.
