Knife Product Review: The Model City Firefighter Evaluates the DX335

Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

COAST's DX335What are your must-have work items? For most of us, a laptop, set of headphones, and a strong cup of coffee would probably make the list. But first responders and firefighters need a completely different set of professional tools, including a good rescue personnel knife. Today we’re highlighting a recent product review for one such COAST rescue knife, the DX335.

ModelCityFirefighter.com recently posted a product review for the DX335. The Model City Firefighter writers are both experienced firefighters, with 20 years of firefighting experience between them. Product Overview: USB Battery Packs for Rechargeable LED Flashlights

Monday, July 29th, 2013

Our newest rechargeable LED flashlights are rife with charging options. The A25R, A22R, HP7R, and HP5R may be charged via a standard wall socket, through your car’s DC power, or via the USB connection in your computer. But that’s not all. We’ve also designed these rechargeable torches to be compatible with traditional alkaline batteries as well as the lithium rechargeable cartridges that come with each light.   Today we’re highlighting the accessory product that makes your rechargeable flashlight even more versatile, our USB battery pack. Not only does each COAST rechargeable flashlight come standard with two of these USB battery packs, but this product is perfect for those who require many hours of reliable light.

Technicians, contractors, and mechanics will love how the USB battery pack extends operation times. For instance, let’s say you’re the proud owner of an A22R rechargeable flashlight. You love the 370-foot beam distance, and the 241-lumen output. But the 3 hour 30 minute run time isn’t long enough to power through your whole work day. Here’s where the battery pack comes in handy. Just charge your A22R each night, and pack a fully charged battery pack in your work bag. That way, when the first 3 hour 30 minute period elapses, you can switch to the charged lithium battery and keep on working. Indeed, along with the two that come with our rechargeable torches, you could even purchase multiple battery packs, and keep switching out spent batteries as needed.

LumensIn fashion, size is important, but it doesn’t tell you a whole lot about how a garment fits to an individual’s body shape. In nutrition, a calorie count can tell you how much energy a food provides, but you also need exercise information to understand how a certain dish will impact a person’s waistline. A similar measurement conundrum exists in the world of LED flashlights. Lumen is often the go-to stat for flashlight makers and consumers – yet this oft-touted number doesn’t tell you everything about the value or quality of light that a certain torch provides.

Indeed, it would be unwise to select a flashlight based solely on lumen production. Here are a few things that lumen statistics can’t tell you about how a certain flashlight performs. (more…)

Folding Knife Know-How: What is a G10 Handle?

Wednesday, July 17th, 2013

COAST's FX350 Folding KnifeThe lingo of the knife world is unique. When choosing a tactical knife or folding knife, it’s useful to understand the vocabulary for types of blades and handles. Today we’re exploring a specific type of folding knife handle, the G10. You can find a G10 handle on our FX350 folding knife.

Basically, G10 is a term for a high grade of laminate. To make this material, manufacturers weave glass cloth into epoxy resin. This process creates a strong material with high impact resistance as well as dimensional stability.

Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

Light is a notoriously tricky thing to describe. Poets rave over its many moods. Physics gurus question its very structure—is light a wavelength or a particle? As LED flashlight makers, our challenge is to accurately portray the light created by our elite line of torches. To do so, we’ve created a video highlighting two of our optics systems, Long Range optics and Pure Beam Focusing Optic.
