LEDs and Fashion: Target Says “Yes!”

Who would’ve thought that high fashion and LED lights could go hand in hand? Why, Target, that’s who!

On August 18, Target hosted an opening party for its East Harlem store at the Standard Hotel, creating a giant exterior facade they used to preview its fall clothing collection. So what was the highlight of the show? Was it the clothes? The music? Of course not. It was the lighting.

Washington Poacher Caught and Charged

A Washington man was arrested and charged with four gross misdemeanor counts of illegal poaching last week, according to a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife press release.

Kyle O’Brien, 18, faces seven misdemeanor charges related to poaching; four counts of hunting deer during closed season, one count of spotlighting big game, one count of shooting from a road and one count of having a loaded firearm in a vehicle.

Park Rangers May Have New Role as Public Health Officials

There may be a new role for America’s park rangers in the near future: public health educator.

According to a press release by the National Park Service, a recent project tested the viability of using national parks as settings for educating hunting, fishing and outdoor enthusiasts on important national health issues.

Mexico City Will Serve As Test-Run for Solar-Powered LED Street Lights

A superhighway in Mexico City will be the country’s first attempt at using solar-powered LED lights in streetlamps as a roadway lighting alternative.

The roadway-lighting project will run along the new 23 km. Viaducto Bicentario elevated superhighway from Lomas Verges to Tepotzotlan in Mexico City. The project is a joint venture by the Lighting Service Group (LSG) and BHP Energy Mexico and will use LSG’s Prolific DC series LED Roadway 100 watt bulb.

Watch Out For Hungry, Hungry Bears!

No, it isn’t an episode of The Yogi Bear Show – this is for real! According to a story from the Associated Press,

Yellowstone’s grizzly bear population may be more aggressive towards humans due to the scarcity of whitebark pine nuts, their normal food supply. Two people have been mauled by grizzlies this year already, making it the deadliest summer on record.

The LED Tube Debate Rages On

You may not believe it, but the debate over whether LED light technology is better than more traditional fluorescent bulbs is still a hot issue. Proponents of LED bulbs claim that the lights are more energy efficient, last longer and are more environmentally friendly. However, there are many that still think the higher up-front costs and relatively undeveloped technology of LEDs make them a less than optimum choice for the average home or business environment.

Before you decide on whether or not to choose LED tubes over fluorescent tubes, make sure you understand the pros and cons of both products. The following are a few categories you should consider when deciding on a bulb, and how both LED and fluorescent tubes measure up.

ODFW Ask Bowhunters for Teeth

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has made an interesting request of Oregon bowhunters: teeth.

Black-tailed deer teeth, to be precise. According to a press release earlier this week, ODFW biologists use teeth collected from hunters to determine the age of the deer, which can then be used for population modeling. The age of the deer is determined by analyzing the roots of the sample tooth, and is apparently quite accurate.
