Water-Tight Tips for Enjoying Spring Rains

Enjoy the RainEarlier this week, we highlighted Coast’s new article concerning hiking safety in the mud-ridden spring season. Today, we’re extending the focus of dealing with the rainy season by highlighting another article, Hiking and Camping in Wet and Muddy Conditions, by Bill Sassani. The article offers a number of fabulous tips for dealing with the spring weather’s unfortunate side effects — water and mud.

First, Sassani encourages campers and hikers to plan ahead by doing simple things like looking at the weather forecast and packing appropriate clothing. In regard to planning ahead, the article also offers a few easy tips for weatherproofing your gear.

VP Biden and Cree Talk Green Technology

Joe BidenLast Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden visited Cree to discuss the Obama administration’s commitment to fighting for issues important to America’s middle class families, including creating well-paying manufacturing jobs and building the clean energy economy, according to reports from Cree, Inc.

Vice President Biden toured Cree’s facilities with Chuck Swoboda, chairman and chief executive officer of Cree, and spoke with employees about the benefits of working for a green technology company and their concerns about the economy.

New Article: Mud Hiking!

Mud HikingCoast published a new article this month called “Mud Season Hiking: How to Stay Safe” by Ben Nystrom. The article offers practical advice on hiking trails in late winter and early spring when mud is prevalent on trails, making them potentially hazardous to both hikers and the surrounding environment.

Nystrom opens by briefly explaining that mud season is simply melting snow and rain that saturate the ground, creating massive amounts of mud. As he continues, he makes a number of crucial observations about hiking trails during this particular season that will help keep you safe as well as content along the way.

Spring Razor Clam Season Open Now!

wdfwlogoThe Washington Department of Fish and Game (WDFW) has given the “go-ahead” for the March razor clam season to begin along Washington beaches.

“The results of marine toxin tests are in, confirming that clams are safe to eat, and clearing the way for the spring’s first razor-clam digs on ocean beaches,” reports WDFW. As a result, the season opened yesterday, March 26, and will continue through April 1 at various Washington beaches.

LEDs Light Up Spain

LEDs in SpainOne thousand LED streetlights were recently installed in a resort town in Spain, reported Seoul Semiconducter, Inc. “Streets will be brighter, tourists safer, and electrical bills lesser,” their story begins.

Apparently, the new LED lights were installed in the municipality of Rafelbunyol and are part of a larger movement to replace existing light bulbs on streets and in public facilities throughout the country with high-quality, energy-efficient LED lighting

Green Campgrounds Get Even Greener

Campground Solar PanelIn the previous post, I added my own thoughts to the new business partnership between KOA campgrounds and Airstream trailers. Today, I found another interesting article about campgrounds and RV parks that I have similar sentiments about…

The premise of this particular article highlighted a number of campgrounds and RV parks that are investing in energy and water saving technologies. Specifically, as the article puts it: “spending green to go green.” The irony, of course, is that these places — places where people have been going for decades to reconnect with nature — are now having to retreat back to nature themselves.

Trailer-Campers Can Now Travel Trailer-less?

Airstream TrailerI read in the news last week that KOA campgrounds are going to start renting out Airstream trailers to its visitors. Apparently, KOA is providing three campgrounds in three states — Nevada, Maine, and Florida — and Airstream will disperse 25 of its most popular trailers among them. Does this seem a little weird to anyone else?

“The rental trailers come fully stocked with linens and kitchenware. Tourists need only open the door to a turnkey travel experience, just like a hotel room,” said Airstream’s aptly named chief executive, Bob Wheeler.
