Cowboys Unviel New LED Screen

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

The Dallas Cowboys will go green this coming season — no, not their team colors — with the introduction of the NFL’s largest HD LED video screen; in fact, make that the world’s largest. I guess the saying “everything’s bigger in Texas” really does carry some truth to it.

According to a press release from Mitsubishi Electric, the company who manufactured the record-breaking display, the four-sided and center-hung display is the first of its kind in the NFL, and it cost the Cowboys a pretty penny — 4 billion pennies to be precise, that is, 40 million dollars.

According to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, female hunters comprise the fastest growing segment of the hunting public. As such, Idaho Fish and Game has scheduled a hunting clinic in order to introduce the sport to women as well as help female hunters further their hunting skills.

Weekend Camping

Friday, June 12th, 2009

This summer, with a failing economy and high unemployment rate, many people are 1) going to be working as much as they can, and two) not going to have a lot of extra money to spend on extravagant summer vacations. The solution: weekend camping.

It’s as easy as loading up all your camping gear in the car or minivan, leaving a little early from work, and hitting the road with enough daylight left to reach your destination and set up camp safely. It’s perfect, really. Retreating to a great location where there’s peace and quiet, and you won’t lose an arm and a leg in the process, is the perfect solution to vacations on a small budget.

LEDs Light-up Lettuce

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Scientists from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) have developed a method for making lettuce healthier by exposing it to UV LED light. Stephen Britz, a plant physiologist with the USDA, and his colleagues presented their research at the 2009 Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics/International Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/IQEC) earlier this month.

Apparently, exposure to ultraviolet LED light causes the leaves of lettuce to become darker and redder, meaning they possess more antioxidants. Diets rich in antioxidants are said to provide a variety of health benefits including improving brain function and slowing the effects of aging.

That’s right. Idaho’s Free Fishing Day is coming up quick, so get ready!

Tips for “Green” Camping

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Coast recently published an article called Simple Green Camping Tips in which they offer a number of great ideas to simplify — and “greenify” — your camping experience. Here’s a quick overview of what they recommend:

  • Bring a Tent, Not an RV. Just think of the savings on power, fuel, and water…
  • Pack Biodegradable. Specifically, find soaps and sanitizers that are safe for local wildlife and their habitats.
  • Pack Reusable. Planning on using styrofoam or paper products? Don’t. Pack the real plates, cups, napkins, etc.
  • LED Lights. LEDs are the innovation to beat these days. Brighter beams, longer life, and green, green, green.
  • Leave No Trace. In other words, treat your campsite like you would a neighbor’s home — leave it better than how you found it.
