As the holidays loom closer with each passing day, it’s inevitably time to start thinking about gifts. And if you’re like me, shopping for Dad can be the most difficult. What exactly do you get a guy who already has everything? And how do you find that balance between practicality and thoughtfulness—because, really, how many neckties does one man need? After wrestling with those same questions year after year, I decided to compile a list of new and fresh, fail-safe gift ideas that are sure to be a hit with dear ol’ Dad.
Knowing Your Pappy
The first step toward getting a great gift for Dad is knowing what kind of man he is. Since every dad is a little different, knowing his personality can be the difference between a gift that leaves him saying, “Whoa…”, and a gift that, well, doesn’t. That’s why I’ve highlighted some popular “dad personalities” and matched them with great gifts ideas below.
The If-It-Ain’t-Broke-Don’t-Fix-It Dad
If your dad isn’t exactly on the cutting-edge of technology—maybe he’s “old fashioned” or just stuck in a decade long past—this is your dad. And it’s your duty to introduce him to LED technology, potentially one of the most revolutionary and efficient advances of the modern day. If he’s still using an old, unreliable, battery-draining flashlight, upgrade him to one of many new, long-lasting, reliable LED flashlights—brighter, power-efficient, and up to 100,000 hours of bulb life. If your dad appreciates a good, quality, low-maintenance product, an LED flashlight is the way to go.
In addition to your ordinary handheld LED flashlight, there are a number of creative variations for a dad who appreciates innovation and convenience. Try a flex-neck light, for instance. These lights bend and shape to focus light in any direction and often come equipped with attachment clips that free up the use of both hands. These LED flex-neck lights are perfect for reading or working in dark spaces. Similarly, LED headlamps also provide a “hands-free” environment to maximize work and recreation. LED headlamps are great for hiking and camping too!
The If-It-Ain’t-Broke-Fix-It-Anyway Dad
This dad is a self-proclaimed handyman (or even a legitimate one) that sometimes does more harm than good. If this sounds like your dad, then an affordable multi-tool or pocket knife is the perfect Christmas gift or stocking stuffer. Multi-tools come in varying sizes, with anywhere from 3-4 tools to 20+ different functions all in one! With a multi-function pocket knife or tool, your dad has a solution for nearly every problem he might encounter. And since these multi-tools are compact and travel-friendly, pocket knives and tools also work as great gifts for the avid adventurer and sportsman.
For the “Real” Man
Of course, your dad may be a real man—the only way to celebrate his machismo is with an equally manly gift. And nothing says “man” like a tough tactical knife. Built to handle the highest level of performance, tactical knives are often lightweight and extremely durable. While tactical knives differ slightly in feature and function, the biggest decision you’ll need to make is whether to purchase a collapsible folding knife or a fixed-blade knife and sheath. Both are excellent choices and simply a matter of preference. Additional features to consider include carbide tips, drop point and serrated blades, one-handed opening and liner-lock (for folding knives), and performance-enhancing coatings. Any way you go, these high-performance knives are sure to be a hit with Dad.
These dads love the outdoors! If your father’s an avid hunter, consider wrapping up a stainless steel hunting knife. With either a fixed-blade or folding knife, you really have the chance to impress Dad with an exquisite hardwood or stag bone handle. Similarly, for the fisherman father, gifting him an equally exquisite fillet knife would do the trick.
Another great gift for the huntsman father is a tough tactical flashlight. These lights are designed to perform in extreme outdoor situations and are used by law enforcement and military personnel. Boasting advanced optical and digital technology, these lights are lightweight and compact, and include various means of attaching to equipment. There are a number of innovative LED-based fishing lights and lamps available for the angler as well.
The Strong, Silent Type
LED technology also offers a number of office and home lighting solutions for your bookworm, blogger, or computer savvy dad—an LED desk lamp or standing lamp is probably the easiest and most affordable. LED lamps are not limited to average white-colored light, so if you’re feeling daring, select a hue that suits your father perfectly. Your dad will appreciate the thoughtfulness as well as the efficiency and long life of his new LED lamp.
